Android download mode will not charge battery

My android samsung galaxy prevail phone will not charge anymore, I have tried new cords and adapters. After a few times it went into download mode. The battery is probably failing -- have you already tried a new battery 

• I have not the device anymore to investigate the battery issue myself, so that's a pity For me it doesn't even charge in Fastboot mode but I think it does to root a phone is really a drawback of Android (and Motorola/Lenovo).
